Eric Theodore Carlson collection finding aid, part 1
This is the first part of a two part finding aid for the Eric Theodore Carlson collection. This part features the abstract and biographical note.
Abstract:
The Eric Theodore Carlson collection contains business and
personal correspondence. The collection is focused on Ted Carlson’s time in the
military from 1944 to 1946. It discusses his experiences at various
institutions of higher education as well as his life in the military during
World War II.
Biographical note:
Ted Carlson attended Wesleyan University in Middletown,
Connecticut. He graduated with honors with a degree in Chemistry in February
1944. Shortly after graduating he moved to Aimes, Iowa to attend Iowa State
College for graduate school. While at Iowa State College, he was enlisted in
the Army.
In August 1944, Mr. Carlson reported to Fort Snelling, Minnesota
for induction as a private in the United States Army. After induction, he was
ordered to the Chrysler Corporation in Detroit, Michigan where he was transferred
to the Enlisted Reserve Corps and served in the Special Engineer Detachment of
the Manhattan District Corps of Engineers. He was recalled to Active Duty in
October 1945 at Fort Sheridan, IL. He went through basic training at Fort
Leonard, Missouri in October 1945 and was sent to Oak Ridge, Tennessee after
completing basic training in November 1945.
In March 1946, Mr. Carlson was offered a research assistant
position with the Monsanto Chemical Company. Upon receiving this offer, he
requested to be discharged from the Army. His request was granted in May 1946.
Soon after, he applied to Cornell. He began a PhD program at Cornell in September
1946.
